Rajasthan Makes Precision Weighing Mandatory for Gold & Silver Trade
Traders must use Class I or Class II category weighing scales for gold, silver and other precious metals; verification interval of these scales must also be 1 mg or less
UdaipurTimes, Oct 30, 2026 - In a significant initiative to protect the interests of consumers purchasing gold and silver and ensure transparency in weighing, the Rajasthan government has introduced new regulations. The Department of Consumer Affairs has notified the Rajasthan Legal Metrology (Enforcement) (Second Amendment) Rules, 2026, which came into effect on October 29, 2026.
Under the new provisions, the use of precision weighing scales conforming to prescribed standards has been made mandatory for the purchase and sale of gold, silver and other precious metals.
According to the amended rules, only Class I (Special Accuracy) or Class II (High Accuracy) weighing scales can be used for weighing precious metals. The verification interval of these scales must be 1 milligram or less. This will ensure greater accuracy even when weighing very small quantities, enabling consumers to receive the exact quantity of gold and silver they pay for.
The Department of Consumer Affairs has urged all jewellers, bullion traders and establishments dealing in precious metals to ensure compliance with the new provisions.
Traders must use Class I or Class II category weighing scales for weighing gold, silver and other precious metals. The verification interval of these scales must also be 1 milligram or less.
The department has directed traders to get their weighing scales verified in accordance with the prescribed regulations and maintain valid verification certificates. Traders who do not currently possess weighing scales meeting the prescribed standards must make arrangements to acquire compliant equipment.
Consumer Affairs Minister Sumit Godara said the initiative aims to ensure accurate weighing and transparency in the purchase and sale of gold and silver, particularly during Diwali and throughout the year, while effectively safeguarding consumer interests.
The new provisions are expected to reduce the possibility of irregularities in the weighing of precious metals and help consumers receive the exact quantity of metal corresponding to the amount they pay.
The department has also appealed to consumers to pay special attention to weighing while purchasing gold and silver during Diwali and register complaints in case of any irregularities.
Consumers can lodge their complaints through the Rajasthan Consumer Helpline at 14435.
