Multi geared bicycles, flashy looking dolls and high resolution 3d Avatar Games are some new toys in demand. The world is crunching in the hands of technology and so the toys too have changed their shapes and functionality. It might be repeated more than million of times that how nature has gifted Udaipur with sky touching mountain ranges, beautiful lakes and colorful traditions, but one thing which was slightly ignored till now is Udaipur’s Wooden Toys.
It is impossible to compare the beauty of wooden toys with any of the 21st century toys; perhaps it could not be that demanding as it was some 10 years back. But still wooden toys attracts with their simplicity, creativity and long preserved history.
To track the birth of Wooden Toys I have to turn back the pages to those old history books, it is believed and possibly very true that existence of toys was since the existence of early civilizations. Every child plays with toys despite of his caste, color, creed or how rich or poor his parents are to afford it. Toys evolved from stones to animal’s bones and then made by wood, metals, plastics etc.
Wooden Toys made in Udaipur are varied in shapes, sizes and usage but only thing common in them are their low price. Horse Swing, baby walker, drumming doll, artifacts, show pieces, key chains and many other diverse varieties of products are best to add your shopping cart.
There are many shops located in and around Hathipole and Ganta Ghar (clock tower) areas which deals with wooden toys and other artifacts, the one which I visited was Tayyebi Handicrafts Emporium at Panndhay Marg Hathipol, this 35 year old shop has witnessed the long journey of wooden items made in Udaipur, they have vast varieties of beautifully crafted and nicely showcased things to grab your attention.
The price ranges from Rs 20 to Rs 10,000 or Rs 15,000 depending upon the craftsmanship in Zinc and wood, and on weight in Brass articles. Yes they have metallic items too. Decorative Boxes and Abacuses made of Wood, Brass, Zinc and White Metal. Here I also learned that this kind of work on wood is also done in Jaipur and Jodhpur but the craftsmanship of Udaipur is world famous and unique.
Buy it as a souvenir of your trip to Udaipur or gift them to someone you love, there could be many reasons to make life cheerful, Udaipur’s wooden Toys are just one irresistible option.
