Udaipur, December 31, 2024 - Koner Humpy has made a remarkable comeback by winning the Women's World Rapid Chess Championship in New York. She scored 8.5 points in 11 rounds to secure the title.
Humpy, 37, had faced a series of poor results before this victory. She had a disappointing performance at the 2022 Olympiad, where the top-seeded Indian women's team settled for bronze. She also finished second-last in a June event in Norway and last in the Tata Rapid meet in November.
“I was playing badly and losing badly. So I started questioning myself and I was feeling quite low. But I thought I should give this tournament a try and I am happy that it worked out.” - Humpy
Additionally, Humpy was not part of the Indian team that won gold at the September Olympiad. Despite these setbacks, she proved her strength by clinching the World Rapid title again.
This is her second World Rapid Championship win, as she also won in 2019. With this victory, she becomes only the second woman ever to win the title twice, after China's Ju Wenjun.
