India wraps up maiden Thomas Cup with a 3-0 whitewash over Indonesia

The Indian Badminton team scripted history in style as they gave a 3-0 drubbing to 14 time champions Indonesia in the Thomas Cup final held at Bangkok today.

Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty got home the country first ever Thomas Cup today.


India was off to a perfect start with Lakshya defeating Anthony Ginting 8-21, 21-17, 21-16 in a thrilling tie. The next match, which was a doubles, saw the Indian pair of Satwik-Chirag beat Asian Games Gold Medalists Ahsan-Sukamuljo 18-21, 23-21, 21-19, giving India a 2-0 lead. Kidambi Srikanth beat Jonatan Christie 21-15, 23-21 to make it 3-0 and wrap up the Indian Thomas Cup campaign without losing a match in the final.

An award of Rs 1 Crore was announced by the sports governing body in India for the winning team.
