January 22, 2026: Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has questioned how the Indian team is using Rinku Singh in the batting order, even after his strong performance against New Zealand in the first T20I. India defeated New Zealand in the opening match.

After a poor ODI series, India made a strong comeback with a 48-run win. India batted first and scored a huge total of 238 runs in 20 overs. Rinku Singh played an important role at the end, scoring 44 runs off 20 balls.

However, Chopra raised concerns about Rinku’s batting position. He feels that Rinku should not always bat as a finisher and should be given a chance higher up the order.

“In my opinion, Rinku Singh bats too low in the order. He is seen as a finisher, but should he always be used that way? This question must be asked. Even though he got more balls to face in this match, many times only 18 or so balls are left when a finisher comes in to bat,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

Aakash Chopra Shares Views on Rinku Singh’s Batting Role

While praising Rinku Singh for being a true team player, Aakash Chopra said that the 28-year-old is not someone who can start hitting big shots from the very first ball. He feels Rinku needs a little time at the crease to give his best.

“When around 18 balls are left, he may only face eight to ten balls. Is he someone who can hit a six from the first ball? He always gives more than 100 percent and tries his best. But if you want the best from him, you should give him a few more overs to bat,” Chopra said.

Rinku later proved his value by scoring 20 runs in the final over off Daryl Mitchell, which helped India reach a very big total.

Send Rinku Ahead of Shivam Dube: Chopra

Chopra also suggested a change in the batting order. He said that Shivam Dube, who is a natural power-hitter, should be used as the main finisher. This would allow Rinku Singh to bat higher up the order.

“All of Rinku’s three half-centuries came when he batted in the powerplay. I am not saying he should always bat there, but when Shivam Dube was sent in, Rinku could have been sent instead. Let Rinku bat there. Shivam Dube is a natural six-hitter with great strength, so he can bat a little lower,” Chopra explained.

Shivam Dube also had a good match with an all-round performance. He scored nine runs off four balls and took two wickets in the opening game.
