Al Hilal become first Asian club to beat a European side in an official FIFA tournament
July 1, 2025 - Brazilian club Fluminense caused a big surprise by eliminating Inter Milan in the night match. Then, this morning, Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal followed the same path shown by Fluminense.
The Saudi club confirmed their place in the quarter-finals of the Club World Cup by defeating the defending champions Manchester City 4-3 in an incredible match full of ups and downs. Al Hilal will now face Fluminense at 1 AM in the semi-finals on Friday.
Al Hilal is one of the best clubs in the Asian region, but they are not usually compared to a team like Manchester City. Pep Guardiola's side was the only team to win all three matches in the group stage. After scoring 13 goals in those three games, many believed City had returned to form after a tough period.
Al Hilal Ends Man City's Comeback Story
Al Hilal stopped Manchester City's comeback in a big way. They made history at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando by becoming the first Asian club to beat a European team in an official FIFA tournament. This win also ended a 20-match winning run of European teams against Asian clubs.
Good Start for Man City
The match started well for City. Bernardo Silva scored in the 9th minute to give them the lead. City had more of the ball and looked strong in attack. They had chances to score more goals in the first half, but Al Hilal’s goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, made some great saves. He made 10 saves in total and played a big role in Al Hilal’s win.
Al Hilal Strikes Back After the Break
Al Hilal did not get many chances in the first half. City went into the break with a 1-0 lead. But after the break, Al Hilal came out strong. Marcos Leonardo scored in the 46th minute to make it 1-1. Then in the 52nd minute, Malcom scored to put Al Hilal ahead 2-1.
But City quickly came back. Erling Haaland scored in the 55th minute to make it 2-2. Both teams tried hard to score again, but the match stayed level. It went into extra time.
Extra Time: Al Hilal Makes History
In the 94th minute, Kalidou Koulibaly scored to give Al Hilal a 3-2 lead. But again, City came back. Phil Foden scored in the 104th minute to make it 3-3. Then, in the 112th minute, Marcos Leonardo scored again. This goal made it 4-3 for Al Hilal. After that, Manchester City could not score again.
