February 16, 2026: All-rounder Amelia Kerr has been appointed captain of New Zealand in all formats. She replaces Sophie Devine, who retired from ODIs after the 2025 World Cup and stepped down as T20I captain. Kerrโ€™s first series as full-time captain will be at home against Zimbabwe later this month.

The 25-year-old made her international debut in 2016. She has played 84 ODIs and 88 T20Is for New Zealand. In ODIs, she has scored 2,304 runs at an average of 41.14 and taken 106 wickets. In T20Is, she has scored 1,453 runs and taken 95 wickets with a good economy rate of 6.09. Kerr also has captaincy experience. She led Wellington Blaze to back-to-back Super Smash titles in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons.

Kerr said that captaincy will not change who she is. She said she will give her best to lead the team and make the country proud. She also shared a quote that means people come first and said the team will support and respect each other.

Coach Ben Sawyer Backs Kerrโ€™s Leadership

New Zealand head coach Ben Sawyer praised Kerr and said she has been an important part of the team for many years. He said she understands what it means to represent New Zealand and has great respect from her teammates.

Sawyer said Kerr has good knowledge of the game and strong leadership skills. He believes she is ready to lead the team in all formats. He also said her captaincy will bring stability and help the team build towards the 2029 cycle.

The New Zealand squad for the Zimbabwe series will be announced on February 20. The three-match T20I series will begin on February 25 in Hamilton.
