May 06, 2026: Arsenal F.C. produced a calm and disciplined performance to beat AtlƩtico Madrid 1-0 in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final at the Emirates Stadium. The win gave Arsenal a 2-1 aggregate victory and sent them into the Champions League final for the first time in 20 years. Their only previous final came in 2006.

The match was not full of attacking action, as both teams focused on staying strong in defence and waiting for chances. Arsenal looked slightly more confident, especially at home where they had been solid throughout the tournament. They stayed patient and waited for the right moment to attack.

That moment came late in the first half. Leandro Trossard took a shot after a good move, which was saved by AtlƩtico goalkeeper Jan Oblak. However, the ball was not cleared properly, and Bukayo Saka reacted quickly to score from close range. The goal gave Arsenal a 1-0 lead and boosted their confidence before halftime.

Arsenal Hold Strong to Reach Final

AtlĆ©tico Madrid came out stronger in the second half and tried to put pressure on Arsenal’s defence. Giuliano Simeone had a chance but delayed his shot, allowing the defence to recover. There were also penalty appeals after a challenge involving Gabriel MagalhĆ£es, but VAR ruled that no foul had taken place.

Antoine Griezmann also tested goalkeeper David Raya, who made an important save to keep Arsenal ahead. Despite the pressure, Arsenal stayed organised and did not allow many clear chances.
The hosts also created a good opportunity in the second half but failed to score. Still, their defence remained strong until the final whistle, even as rain started to fall late in the match. Arsenal held on to secure a famous win and reach the final.

After the match, Declan Rice praised the team’s effort and said their journey in the competition should not be underestimated. ā€œI don’t think you can underestimate what we’ve done in this competition up to this point. We’ve every right to celebrate, it’s such a big moment. The Champions League is the most prestigious tournament and it’s a proud moment for the club and the boys,ā€ Rice said.

He also spoke about the team’s growth in recent years under Mikel Arteta. ā€œWhere this club has come from in the last few years, with the narrow losses we’ve had in the Premier League and going out of cup competitions, these things can hurt you. The manager has taken full control, we’ve kept building and adding quality to the squad. We’ve kept pushing each other, and in this competition and the Premier League, we’ve gone full throttle and find ourselves in a very good position with less than a month to go,ā€ he added.

Arsenal will now face either Bayern Munich or Paris Saint-Germain in the final in Budapest on May 30, as they aim to win their first-ever Champions League title.
