Asia Cup 2025: Indian Coach Warns Against Complacency, Says Clash With Pakistan Is Just Another Challenge
Bowling coach Morne Morkel says India won’t underestimate Pakistan and focus remains on strong preparation in Dubai
Sept 10, 2025: The 17th season of the Asia Cup started on September 9, in the UAE. Afghanistan won the first match against Hong Kong. The Indian team begins its Group A campaign against the United Arab Emirates in Dubai Sept 10. After that, India will face Pakistan in Dubai on Sept 14 and Oman in Abu Dhabi on Sept 19.
Indian bowling coach Morne Morkel said that the team will not take any opponent lightly in the T20 Asia Cup. Speaking about Pakistan at a press conference during India’s practice at the ICC Academy on Monday, Morkel said, “Pakistan has improved a lot in cricket. They have played well recently and we are ready for this challenge. We will not take them lightly. We respect all opponents, and the same applies to Pakistan.”
He further said, “We always prepare our best. We know what type of cricket we have to play. It is important to focus on our own game and not think too much about the other team. Yes, we will study Pakistan’s strengths and also look at their weaknesses.”
Indian Team’s Preparation
Talking about India’s training in Dubai, Morkel said, “It is very hot here, but the players are working hard and enjoying it. We have a very good white-ball team and we are playing good cricket. Our preparation has been excellent so far. I am excited for the first match.”
Before joining India as bowling coach, Morne Morkel worked with the Pakistan cricket team. Because of this, he may already know their weaknesses.
Focus on Practice and Conditions
On India’s T20I team coming back together after the 4-1 series win against England in January, Morkel said the focus has been on making practice similar to real match days. He said, “When a player wears the Indian jersey, the preparation for the match begins. Once they start winning, these players will be ready to give their best on the field.”
He also added, “T20 cricket makes many teams equal. So, it is very important for us to understand the conditions quickly and how the pitch will behave.”
