An unexpected turn was marked in the Asian Powerlifting Championship 2012 which is going on in Udaipur from last three days, when some used syringes were found in the washroom of Hotel Inder Residency, the venue for the championship.

Among the syringes a dose of multi-vitamin was also found in the waste box of washroom. It has aroused a doubt that those syringes might have been used for doping purpose though nothing is yet confirmed.

This shocking flash came just in time when it was being talked that the Doping Squad has not reached in the tournament on time for carrying out doping test procedures.

When UT asked Subroto Dutta, President of Indian Powerlifting Federation about the negligence regarding doping tests, he said, “It’s not the duty of organizers to do dope tests. For this, we asked Doping Squad to be here as that’s the governing authority to carry out such procedures.”

Subroto Dutta said, “We consulted Doping Squad about their schedule but due to their engagement somewhere we asked them to come on 5th – 6th May. We didn’t purposely ask them to be late; it was because of their schedule.”

When asked about their unavailability B.J Verma, Assistant Project Officer of Doping Squad said, “The organizers of the championship gave us a date to be here and we are precisely on the schedule.”

B.J Verma of the Doping Squad informed that they collected urine samples of five athletes including three females and two male athletes. Among three females, one is representing India in the tournament.

Verma said, “We’ve taken the sample on random basis and will be forwarding those samples to Delhi for further tests. The final report would be out within ten days.”
