June 28, 2025 - Australia defeated West Indies in the first session on the third day of the first Test match played in Barbados. On Friday, June 27, Australia began their new World Test Championship cycle with a big win. Josh Hazlewood took five wickets in the second innings and played a key role in Australia’s 159-run victory over West Indies.

While chasing the target of 301 runs, the hosts lost former captain Kraigg Brathwaite early to Mitchell Starc. Opener John Campbell and number three Keacy Carty played some attacking shots to take West Indies close to 50 runs. But then, Hazlewood showed his skill. He dismissed Campbell and Brandon King on back-to-back balls, reducing West Indies to 47 for 3.

Five Wickets Fall for Just 56 Runs

Captain Roston Chase, who was controversially given out in the first innings, was caught in the slip by Sam Constas off Hazlewood’s bowling. This brought the West Indies score to 49/4. Soon after, Hazlewood dismissed Keacy Carty, reducing the hosts to 56/5.

Eight Out Before 100 Runs

Captain Pat Cummins gave a big blow by clean bowling Shai Hope. After that, Marnus Labuschagne ran out Alzarri Joseph. Hazlewood then took his fifth wicket by getting Jomel Warrican caught behind the stumps. At this point, West Indies were 86/8.

Joseph and Greaves Show Fight with 55-Run Stand

After taking 5 wickets in the second innings and 4 in the first, Shamar Joseph also did well with the bat. He and Justin Greaves added 55 runs for the ninth wicket. Joseph scored 44 runs off 22 balls, while Greaves made 38 off 53.

Lyon Ends Resistance, Australia Wins

Nathan Lyon made his mark by dismissing Joseph and then Jaden Seales for a duck. This sealed Australia’s victory by 159 runs.

With this win, Australia also took revenge for the 8-run defeat at the Gabba last year - West Indies had beaten them at home after 27 years.
