Australia Eliminated from T20 World Cup After Zimbabwe vs Ireland Match Abandoned Due to Rain
Australia has been knocked out of the 2026 T20 World Cup after the Zimbabwe vs Ireland match was abandoned due to rain. The result leaves Australia unable to progress to the next stage of the tournament.
February 17, 2026: Australia have been eliminated from the 2026 T20 World Cup in the group stage. Zimbabwe have qualified for the Super Eight stage after their crucial match against Ireland at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Pallekele was washed out due to rain on Tuesday, February 17. Ireland has also been knocked out of the tournament in the group stage.
Each team received one point from the rained-off match. Australia, with only two points, can no longer catch Zimbabwe, who have five points, even if they win their final match against Oman on Friday (Saturday 0030 AEDT).

Historic Exit for Australia
Australia had lost to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka earlier in the tournament and needed Ireland to beat Zimbabwe to stay alive. They also required Sri Lanka, who have already qualified for the Super Eight, to defeat Zimbabwe. However, persistent rain in Kandy caused the match to be abandoned at 5:30 pm local time, sealing Australia’s exit.
This is the first time Australia have been knocked out of a World Cup at the group stage, in either T20 or ODI formats, since 2009. Their only win came against Ireland, who were also eliminated by the washout.
Zimbabwe, unbeaten so far, will join India, South Africa, and the West Indies in Group 1 of the Super Eight stage. They have earned five points from three matches. The Chevrons won their opener against Oman and stunned Australia by defending 169 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo to win by 23 runs.
Australia, meanwhile, have suffered two losses in three matches, including a defeat to Sri Lanka on February 16.
