Australia Leave Out Big Three Pacers for Upcoming Bangladesh and Pakistan Series
Australia named young squads for the Bangladesh and Pakistan tours, resting Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood ahead of key assignments.
May 11, 2026: Australia have announced their squads for the upcoming tours of Bangladesh and Pakistan, with star fast bowlers Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood missing from both series. Cricket Australia (CA) has focused on giving opportunities to young players ahead of future international campaigns.
The Mitchell Marsh-led side will play three ODIs and three T20Is against Bangladesh after completing a three-match ODI series in Pakistan.
Veteran all-rounders Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis, who have already retired from ODI cricket, are available for the T20 format but have not been selected for the Bangladesh series. Steve Smith, who recently returned to Australia’s T20 setup during the T20 World Cup, is also absent from the squad.
Several Australian players currently involved in the IPL will directly join the squad in Bangladesh after completing their commitments in India. Travis Head of Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings trio Cooper Connolly, Xavier Bartlett and Ben Dwarshuis are among those players.
George Bailey Explains Australia’s Squad Strategy
Australia Under-19 captain Oliver Peake has earned a call-up for the ODI series against Pakistan, although he has not been included in the Bangladesh tour squads. In total, 24 players have been selected across the Pakistan and Bangladesh assignments. Chair of selectors George Bailey said the tours are an important opportunity to build squad depth and prepare players for future challenges.
“It’s always exciting to see new players get an opportunity to play international cricket and be a part of the national team. The blend of experienced players and new or returning players provides a good balance for these subcontinent tours,” Bailey said.
He also added that Australia want to continue exposing players to different conditions as part of their long-term planning for upcoming global tournaments. Bangladesh and Australia will begin the ODI series on June 9 in Dhaka. The second and third ODIs will be played on June 11 and June 14. The three-match T20I series will then start on June 17, followed by games on June 19 and June 21.
