April 21, 2026: The Chennai Super Kings have suffered a major setback in the Indian Premier League 2026 season, with young batter Ayush Mhatre ruled out due to a hamstring injury. The in-form player picked up the injury during their recent match against the Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18. In an official statement, the franchise confirmed that Mhatre will need 6–12 weeks of rehabilitation, effectively ending his campaign for the season. His absence comes as a big blow ahead of CSK’s important matches, including a high-profile clash against the Mumbai Indians.

During the game against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mhatre looked in good touch as he quickly scored 30 runs. However, he suffered a hamstring injury while completing a run and was seen limping on the field. Despite receiving medical attention, he continued to bat but struggled to move freely. He later attempted to play attacking shots but was eventually dismissed. After the innings, he needed support from teammates and medical staff while walking back, and further scans confirmed the injury.

CSK’s Growing Injury Concerns

Mhatre’s injury has added to Chennai Super Kings’ growing list of fitness problems this season. Fast bowler Nathan Ellis has already been ruled out, while his replacement Spencer Johnson joined the squad recently. Khaleel Ahmed is also unavailable due to injury, forcing the team to look for more replacements. Adding to the concerns, veteran captain MS Dhoni has been dealing with a calf strain and has not yet featured in the tournament.

Before his injury, Mhatre had emerged as one of the standout young players of IPL 2026. He scored 201 runs in six matches at a strong strike rate of 177.88, including two half-centuries. His aggressive batting in the powerplay made him a key part of CSK’s strategy. The young player, who previously led India’s U19 team to success, was seen as a future star for the franchise.

Who Can Replace Mhatre in the Playing XI?

With Mhatre ruled out, CSK now faces the challenge of finding a suitable replacement at the top of the order. Urvil Patel is one of the strongest options within the squad. He has shown explosive batting ability, scoring quick runs at a high strike rate. In IPL 2025, he scored 68 runs in three matches with an impressive strike rate of over 200, and his aggressive style makes him a good fit for the powerplay.

Other options include Anmolpreet Singh and Yash Dhull, who can provide more stability in the batting lineup. However, considering recent performances and attacking ability, Urvil Patel appears to have an edge. CSK will need to quickly find the right combination to stay competitive as the tournament moves into a crucial phase.
