April 19, 2026: The Chennai Super Kings faced a significant setback in IPL 2026 as young batter Ayush Mhatre suffered a hamstring injury during their clash against the Sunrisers Hyderabad. The 18-year-old right-hander looked in discomfort while running between the wickets, which forced the team management to take notice immediately. His injury has now raised concerns about his availability for the upcoming matches in the tournament.

Speaking after the game, CSK batting coach Michael Hussey confirmed that the youngster has suffered a hamstring tear. ā€œIt’s a hamstring tear. Don’t know how bad it is. We’ll scan him probably tomorrow or the next day. I’m not sure, but yes, it looks pretty bad. Unfortunately, he’s going to be a big loss because he has been in nice touch,ā€ Hussey said. The coach’s statement clearly highlighted the seriousness of the situation, although the exact extent of the injury will only be known after medical scans.

Ayush Mhatre has been one of the bright performers for CSK this season. In this match, he played a quick knock of 30 off just 13 balls, showing his attacking intent. Earlier in the tournament, he had also impressed with important innings, including 38 against Kolkata Knight Riders, 59 against Delhi Capitals, and 73 against Punjab Kings. His consistency and fearless batting made him a key part of the CSK lineup, and his absence could affect the team’s balance going forward.

Despite the setback, Hussey tried to remain positive and mentioned that this situation could open the door for another player in the squad. ā€œHe is an exciting young talent, but it is going to give someone else an opportunity, so that’s exciting as well. We have got some really good players that haven’t gotten an opportunity yet, so it will be a chance for them to step up,ā€ he added. This reflects CSK’s depth in the squad and their approach to handle injuries during a long tournament like the IPL.

SRH hold nerve to defeat CSK in a high-scoring contest

Talking about the match, Sunrisers Hyderabad put up a strong total of 194/9 after batting first. Abhishek Sharma played a brilliant knock of 59 off just 22 balls, giving the team a fast start. Heinrich Klaasen also contributed with a well-made 59 off 39 balls, helping SRH maintain momentum despite losing wickets at regular intervals. CSK bowlers fought back well, with Jamie Overton (3/37), Anshul Kamboj (3/22), and Mukesh Choudhary (2/21) picking up important wickets to restrict the total under 200.

In reply, CSK showed positive intent with early contributions from Ayush Mhatre, Matthew Short (34 off 30), and Sarfaraz Khan (25 off 16). However, they were unable to build long partnerships at crucial moments. SRH bowlers, led by Eshan Malinga (3/29) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (2/31), executed their plans well, especially in the middle and death overs, to control the chase.

CSK needed a strong finish in the final overs, but regular wickets and tight bowling from SRH made it difficult for them to accelerate. Eventually, they fell short by 10 runs in what turned out to be a closely fought contest. With this win, Sunrisers Hyderabad moved to fourth place in the IPL 2026 points table with three wins from six matches, while Chennai Super Kings dropped to seventh with two wins from six games.
