August 11, 2025: The 2025-26 Champions League season is still more than a month away, but Barcelona has received bad news before the season starts. UEFA has punished the team's coach Hansi Flick and two players, Lamine Yamal and Rafinha.
UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) said Flick broke the general code of conduct and basic rules of good behavior in the second leg of last season’s semi-final against Inter Milan. Because of this, the German coach of Barcelona has been banned for one match. Due to the ban, Flick will not be allowed in the dugout for Barcelona’s first match in the group stage of next season’s Champions League. Barcelona’s assistant coach, Markus Sorg, has also received the same punishment.
Angry over Referee decisions
Flick and his staff were angry about some decisions made by referee Szymon Marciniak in that match. After the 4-3 loss, Flick openly questioned the referee’s calls and criticized them in a press conference.
Players fined for Doping Control delay
Barca’s two star players, Yamal and Rafinha, were punished for not going to the doping control area immediately after the match. They did not get match bans but were fined 5,000 euros each. The match at San Siro was very exciting. Barcelona hoped to reach the final after Rafinha scored in the 87th minute. But Inter’s Francesco Acerbi scored an equalizer in added time, and Davide Frattesi scored the winning goal in extra time to eliminate Barca.
At the end of the season, the club won a domestic treble by claiming La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup. However, the European title still slipped away.
In the last warm-up before the new season and the Joan Gamper Trophy match, Barca beat Italian club Como 5-0. Fermin Lopez and Yamal each scored two goals, and Rafinha added another. Barcelona will start the new La Liga season against Mallorca on Saturday, August 16, at 11PM IST. Meanwhile, the Champions League will begin on September 16.
