June 2, 2025 - In the IPL 2025 Qualifier 2, Punjab Kings (PBKS) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by 5 wickets and reached the final. Despite the win, Punjab captain Shreyas Iyer was penalised by the BCCI. Not only Iyer, but Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya too was fined. The BCCI imposed the fine for maintaining a slow over-rate during the Qualifier 2 match held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad yesterday, June 1. The players of both teams were also fined.

These fines were issued for breaking the minimum over-rate rules under the IPL Code of Conduct.

The match started two hours late owing to rain. Batting first, Mumbai put up a big total of 203 runs. In reply,  Shreyas played an unbeaten knock of 87 runs and helped his team chase the target with one over remaining.

Iyer scored 87 runs in just 41 balls, hitting 8 sixes. His brilliant performance broke Mumbai’s record of defending a 200+ total. This was the first time a team chased such a big target easily against Mumbai.

Shreyas and Hardik Fined

This was Punjab’s second slow over rate offense this season. Captain Shreyas was fined Rs 24 lakh and all playing XI and impact players of the team were fined Rs 6 lakh or 25% of their match fee, whichever is less.

For Mumbai Indians, this was their third slow over rate offense of the season. For this, captain Hardik was fined Rs 30 lakh and other players were fined Rs 12 lakh or 50% of their match fee, whichever is less.

A New IPL 2025 Champion Awaits

Punjab Kings will face Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the final on June 3. This is a special final as neither team has won the IPL trophy before. So, IPL will get a new champion for 2025.
