February 6, 2026: Ben Stokes suffered a bad facial injury after a freak accident during an England training session. The England Test captain was hit on the face by a cricket ball, which left him with a badly bruised right eye and a bleeding nose. Stokes later shared a photo on Instagram and tried to joke about the incident.

“You should see the state of the cricket ball,” Stokes wrote on Instagram.

Reports say Stokes was not batting at the time of the accident. He was standing nearby with his teammates when the ball came from his blind side and hit the right side of his face. This happened while Stokes is still recovering from an injury he picked up during the Ashes series.

Stokes’ Leadership Under Scanner After Ashes Loss

Ben Stokes’ leadership has been under discussion after England’s heavy 4-1 defeat to Australia in the Ashes series. Former England fast bowler James Anderson questioned Stokes’ comments after the series, especially his praise for player effort despite the poor result.

Anderson said he did not agree with Stokes praising bowlers for simply putting in effort. Speaking on BBC Radio, he said players are expected to give their best every day. He added that if someone is not ready to work hard for the team, they should not be playing the sport.

Stokes Defends Players and Takes Responsibility

Ben Stokes responded to the criticism during a press conference after the fifth Test. He admitted England made many mistakes, including dropping catches, which hurt the team during the series.

However, Stokes strongly defended his players. He said the team did not perform well but their effort and commitment were never lacking. He added that the main issue was poor execution, not a lack of care or energy from the players.
