May 04, 2026: The Bhavanipur assembly constituency has once again become the most talked-about and closely watched seat in the West Bengal during the 2026 assembly elections. It is widely seen as the most heavyweight constituency in the state due to its political importance and repeated focus in every election cycle. The seat has remained under the control of the All India Trinamool Congress since 2011, making it a stronghold of the party over the years. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has personally represented Bhavanipur, winning the seat in the 2011 by-election, the 2016 assembly election, and again in the 2021 bypoll, which further strengthened the party’s hold in this constituency.

Intense Vote Counting Keeps Outcome Uncertain Despite Lead

At present, the counting of votes is underway at Sakhawat Memorial School, where EVM votes are being closely monitored under tight security. After the thirteenth round of counting, Mamata Banerjee has taken a strong lead, but the result is still not final as seven more rounds of counting remain. This has kept tension high among supporters of both major parties as the final outcome is still open.

The constituency has also drawn attention due to changes in voter data this time. Reports suggest that around 3,893 names were removed from the pending list, while 14,154 names remained under verification. In addition, nearly 10,256 valid voters were confirmed, and overall, more than 51,000 names were excluded from the Bhavanipur electoral roll. These changes have added further scrutiny to the voting process in this high-profile seat.

Bhavanipur Emerges as Political Battleground Between Top Leaders

The Bhavanipur contest has gained even more importance due to the direct political challenge posed by BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, who has brought the fight to the Chief Minister’s stronghold. His entry has made the seat even more competitive and has turned it into a major political battleground in the state.

The broader election in West Bengal was conducted in two phases on April 23 and 29, with repolling ordered in Falta constituency and some booths elsewhere due to irregularities. The state assembly consists of 294 seats, and any party or alliance needs 148 seats to form the government. Exit polls this time have not given a clear prediction, increasing uncertainty around the final results.

In the 2021 elections, the Trinamool Congress won 215 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party became the main opposition with 77 seats. The Left and Congress failed to win any seats. Although Mamata Banerjee lost from Nandigram in 2021, she returned to the assembly through the Bhavanipur by-election, further increasing the political significance of the seat.

Statewide Contest Reflects Deep Political Divide and High Stakes

The 2026 election in West Bengal reflects a larger ideological battle across the state. The contest is shaped by development issues, welfare promises, and strong grassroots campaigning by both major parties. Bhavanipur, in particular, has become the focal point of attention, symbolizing the broader political struggle taking place across the state.

As counting continues, Bhavanipur remains on edge, with the final outcome still pending and closely watched by political observers across the country.
