Bishwabangla Branding Faces Major Overhaul as BJP Prepares for Power Shift in Bengal
West Bengal’s iconic Bishwabangla logo and government branding may undergo major changes after BJP’s victory. Reports suggest administrative and project-level rebranding ahead of the new cabinet oath.
May 08, 2026: During the Trinamool Congress regime, the ‘Bishwabangla’ logo became one of the most visible symbols of the West Bengal government. The distinctive ‘B’ design, which also carried a small image of the Ashoka Pillar, was widely used across official platforms — from government letters and departmental communications to school uniforms and public infrastructure projects across the state.
However, following BJP’s decisive victory in Bengal, indications have emerged that the iconic logo may soon be replaced. The new cabinet is scheduled to take oath at Brigade Parade Ground on Saturday, and discussions regarding administrative changes have already intensified within bureaucratic circles.
Debate Over Ownership and Usage of the Logo
During the 15-year tenure of the Trinamool government, the use of the ‘Bishwabangla’ branding had often sparked debate, particularly regarding allegations of private interference and questions surrounding its legal ownership. Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier stated that the state government could continue using the logo for as long as it wished. According to her remarks, if the government stopped using it, the ownership rights would revert back to her.
Recent developments have further fueled speculation about a possible rebranding exercise. Since the election results were announced, senior officials, including departmental secretaries and police officers, have reportedly been instructed to carefully preserve official records and documents. Notably, a recent communication issued by Chief Secretary Dushyant Nariyala did not carry the Bishwabangla logo, strengthening reports that the administration is preparing for a transition.
Officials across departments have also reportedly been directed to respond swiftly to communications from the central government, with instructions emphasizing faster coordination and immediate sharing of information whenever required.
Possible Renaming of Government Projects
The proposed changes may not remain limited to the logo alone. Sources within the bureaucracy suggest that the process of renaming several state projects linked to central funding has already begun. Previously, there had been repeated disagreements between the Centre and the state government over project branding and naming conventions.
With the change in political leadership, it is now being speculated that several welfare schemes and development projects could receive new identities under the incoming administration. However, the full extent of these changes is expected to become clear only after the official oath-taking ceremony on Saturday.
