BWF World Championships 2026 Draw: Tough Test for Ayush Shetty, Favourable Start for PV Sindhu

August 06, 2026: The draw for the BWF World Championships 2026, scheduled to be held in New Delhi from August 17 to 23, has been officially announced. India's top shuttlers have learned their opening-round opponents, with some receiving favourable draws while others face tough challenges from the very beginning of the tournament.

One of the biggest opening-round matches involving an Indian player will see Asian Championships silver medallist Ayush Shetty take on reigning world champion Shi Yuqi of China in the men's singles event. The two players met earlier this year in the Asian Championships final, where Shi Yuqi defeated the young Indian. Ayush will now get another opportunity to challenge the Chinese star on one of badminton's biggest stages.

Former world champion PV Sindhu has received a relatively comfortable first-round draw and will begin her campaign against Ireland's Sophia Nobel, who is currently ranked World No. 141. Meanwhile, Lakshya Sen, the bronze medallist at the 2022 World Championships, will face Collins Valentine Filimon of Austria in his opening match. If Sen progresses, he could meet Thailand's Kunlavut Vitidsarn in the Round of 16.

India's leading men's doubles pair, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, have received a first-round bye. They will begin their campaign in the second round against either Scotland's Alexander Dunn and Adam Pringle or Thailand's Chaloempon Charoenkitamorn and Worrapol Thongsa-Nga.

Gopichand Confident as India Prepares for Home World Championships

India's national head coach Pullela Gopichand expressed confidence after the draw and believes the Indian contingent has a strong chance of performing well across multiple events.

Speaking about Ayush Shetty's difficult opening match, Gopichand said that facing Shi Yuqi in the first round could actually work in the youngster's favour. According to him, Ayush's aggressive style of play makes him capable of producing an upset, and an early victory over the defending champion could open up the draw and boost his confidence for the rest of the tournament.

Gopichand also highlighted India's growing strength across different categories and said the team is aiming to finish the championships with multiple podium finishes. He added that the overall draw looks positive from India's perspective and offers several players a realistic chance to progress deep into the competition.

For PV Sindhu, the draw has also been encouraging. She has avoided both World No. 1 An Se Young and defending champion Akane Yamaguchi until the later stages of the tournament. However, she could face third seed Wang Zhi Yi of China in the Round of 16 if both players win their opening matches.

The men's doubles pair of Satwik and Chirag also appear to have a favourable path in the early rounds. They are not expected to face a major challenge before a possible meeting with Indonesia's Raymond Indra and Nikolaus Joaquin, which could be one of the key matches in their campaign.

The Badminton Association of India (BAI) has also confirmed that extensive preparations have been made to host the prestigious event. Honorary General Secretary Sanjay Mishra revealed that more than 200 days of planning have gone into organising the championships. Over 1,200 professionals, including engineers, technicians, event specialists, volunteers, and support staff, have worked behind the scenes to ensure the tournament meets the highest international standards. International experts, including lighting specialists from Indonesia, have also been involved in the preparations.

The BWF World Championships are returning to India after a gap of 17 years, making this one of the country's biggest badminton events in recent history. The tournament will be played at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi, where India's top players will look to make the most of home support and compete for world championship medals.
