Udaipur, May 1, 2025: Hat-tricks are not a very rare thing in T20IS. Not even in the IPL. In the first 12 years since it started in 2008, the IPL has seen 19 hat-tricks. However, as batsmen became more dominant in India's franchise tournament, the number of hat-tricks started to go down. Slowly, it reached a point where there had been no hat-trick in the IPL since April 2023.
Yuzvendra Chahal brought back the missing hat-trick in the IPL. The Punjab spinner took three wickets in three balls against Chennai Super Kings in Chepauk. Not just a hat-trick, Chahal took 4 wickets in one over. He is now the only player to take four wickets in an over twice in IPL history.
Punjab Beat Chennai by 4 Wickets
Punjab defeated Chennai by 4 wickets on a special day for 34-year-old spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. Batting first, Chennai scored 190 runs. In reply, Punjab chased down the target with 2 balls to spare. With this win, Punjab moved to second place on the points table. Chennai is now officially out of the playoff race.
Chennai's Collapse in Last Two Overs
Chennai looked set to cross the 200-run mark in the match at MA Chidambaram Stadium. After 18 overs, they were 177 for 5. But in the last two overs, they lost five wickets and managed to score only 13 runs.
The main reason behind this collapse was Chahal. He came to bowl the 19th over. MS Dhoni hit a six on the first ball, but Chahal got him out on the very next delivery. New batsman Deepak Hooda took two runs on the first ball he faced but was caught at backward point on the next one.
Anshul Kamboj was bowled on the fourth ball, and Noor Ahmed was caught at long-on — giving Chahal a hat-trick.
Chahal’s Unique IPL Record
This was Chahal’s second hat-trick in the IPL. His first came in 2022 against Kolkata Knight Riders while playing for Rajasthan Royals — where he also took four wickets in an over.
Although there have been 23 hat-tricks in the IPL, only four times has a bowler taken four wickets in one over. Chahal has done it twice, while Amit Mishra and Andre Russell have done it once each.
Punjab's Strong Chase Led by Iyer and Prabishram
After Chahal’s magical spell, Punjab chased the target well. Shreyas Iyer scored 72 off 41 balls, and Prabishram Singh added 54 off 36 balls. Their partnership helped Punjab win the match smoothly. With this win, Punjab now has 13 points from 10 matches and sits at second place. Chennai, on the other hand, is out of the playoff race after losing 8 of their 10 matches.
