Champions League 2026: After Barcelonaโ€™s Exit, Can Real Madrid Beat Bayern and Rewrite History?

Barcelona are out of the Champions League 2026 race. Now all eyes are on Real Madrid as they face Bayern Munich in a tough knockout battle. Can Madrid rewrite history with a comeback?

 |

April 15, 2026: A two-legged knockout match gives teams a second chance. Even if a team loses the first match, it can still try to win in the second leg. So, the contest is not over after the first game. But making a comeback is very hard, especially under pressure.

When a team loses the first leg, the situation becomes very difficult. The team must perform very well in the second match to stay in the competition. If the first loss happens at home, the problem becomes even bigger because the team must now play away in a tough stadium with more pressure from fans and the opponent.

For example, Barcelona could not complete a comeback in a recent match, even though they tried to improve their game. Liverpool also faced PSG and lost the first leg. In the second leg, they could not recover and were knocked out. These matches show how hard it is to turn things around at this level.

Real Madrid and Sporting Lisbon also faced similar situations. Real Madrid lost 2โ€“1 against Bayern Munich in the first leg at home. Sporting Lisbon lost 1โ€“0 against Arsenal. Both teams now had to win the second leg with pressure and difficulty. In such cases, even strong teams find it very hard to come back.

Champions League comeback history

Since the UEFA Champions League started in 1992โ€“93, teams that lost the first leg at home have almost never made a comeback. It has happened only a few times in history. Out of 115 such cases, only 7 teams managed to qualify for the next round. This means the success rate is only about 6.1 percent. It shows that a comeback in this situation is very rare and difficult.

Famous comeback matches in history

There are some famous examples where teams still managed to come back against the odds. Ajax once lost 1โ€“0 at home to Panathinaikos in the semi-final (1995โ€“96 season). But in the second leg, Ajax played very strongly and won 3โ€“0, reaching the final.

Inter Milan also had a great comeback against Bayern Munich in the 2010โ€“11 season. Inter lost 1โ€“0 at home, but in the second leg they won 3โ€“2 away. The match ended 3โ€“3 on aggregate, and Inter qualified on the away goals rule.

Manchester United also made a famous comeback against PSG in 2018โ€“19. PSG won the first leg 2โ€“0 at Old Trafford. But in the second leg in Paris, Manchester United won 3โ€“1 and went through on away goals.

Ajax also shocked Real Madrid in the same season (2018โ€“19). Ajax lost the first leg 2โ€“1 at home. But in the second leg at Santiago Bernabรฉu, Ajax played very well and won 4โ€“1, making the total score 5โ€“3.

Tottenham had one of the most dramatic comebacks against Ajax in the semi-final of 2018โ€“19. Ajax were leading 3โ€“0 on aggregate. But Tottenham scored three goals, and Lucas Moura scored a hat-trick. Tottenham qualified for the final on away goals.

PSG also made comebacks later. In 2023โ€“24, PSG beat Barcelona in the second leg 4โ€“1 after losing the first leg 3โ€“2. In 2024โ€“25, PSG also came back against Liverpool. Both teams won one match each, and PSG won the tie on a tiebreaker/penalties.
