Cristiano Ronaldo’s brace keeps Portugal firmly in Group K race with 5-0 win over Uzbekistan
Cristiano Ronaldo starred with a brilliant brace as Portugal hammered Uzbekistan 5-0 to climb to the top of Group K at the FIFA World Cup 2026. The Portugal captain also became his country’s all-time leading World Cup scorer and the first player to score in six different editions of the tournament.
24th June, 2026: Cristiano Ronaldo delivered a vintage performance as Portugal thrashed Uzbekistan 5-0 in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group K clash at Houston Stadium on Tuesday (local time), sealing their first win of the tournament in emphatic fashion.
The Portuguese captain struck twice in a commanding display from Roberto Martinez’s side, who bounced back strongly after being held to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo in their opening match. Goals from Nuno Mendes and Rafael Leao, along with an own goal involving Uzbekistan goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov, completed a dominant night for Portugal.
Portugal wasted little time asserting control of the contest and opened the scoring in just the sixth minute. Joao Cancelo delivered a low cross into the box, and Ronaldo was perfectly placed to turn it home from close range, giving Portugal an early advantage and silencing the criticism that followed his underwhelming display in the opener.
The European side doubled its lead 11 minutes later through Nuno Mendes, who curled a superb free-kick into the top corner, leaving Nematov with no chance. Portugal were in complete control by that stage, dominating possession and stretching Uzbekistan with their movement and attacking intent.
Ronaldo then added Portugal’s third goal before the break to effectively put the game beyond Uzbekistan’s reach. In the 39th minute, Bruno Fernandes threaded a perfectly weighted through ball into Ronaldo’s path, and the veteran forward calmly slotted it past the goalkeeper to complete his brace and send Portugal into half-time with a commanding 3-0 lead.

Ronaldo rewrites history as Portugal move top of Group K
Uzbekistan offered little resistance after the restart, with Eldor Shomurodov’s effort over the crossbar standing out as one of their few meaningful chances in the second half.
Portugal, meanwhile, continued to dominate proceedings and added a fourth goal in the 60th minute. Fernandes swung in a corner that Joao Felix flicked on cleverly inside the six-yard box, creating chaos in front of goal. The ball eventually deflected off Abdukodir Khusanov and brushed Nematov’s glove before rolling into the net for an own goal.
Rafael Leao then completed the scoring late in the game. The substitute reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the area in the 87th minute and hammered his finish into the back of the net to cap off another clinical attacking display from Portugal.
The result lifted Portugal to the top of Group K with four points from two matches and significantly improved their goal difference ahead of their final group-stage fixture. Colombia sit second in the group with three points from one game, while Portugal know a win in their next match will guarantee their place in the knockout rounds.
Ronaldo’s brace, however, was the headline moment of the night. The 41-year-old became Portugal’s all-time leading World Cup scorer with 10 goals, moving past the legendary Eusébio’s tally of nine. He also became the first player in football history to score in six different editions of the FIFA World Cup, further enhancing an already extraordinary legacy.
The two-goal display also marked a timely return to form for Ronaldo after a quiet outing against DR Congo, where he failed to register a shot on target. More importantly, it ended a 10-match goal drought in major international tournaments and served as a reminder of his enduring ability to deliver on football’s biggest stage.
Speaking after the match, Ronaldo admitted it had been a difficult week for him personally following the criticism that came his way after Portugal’s opening game. The veteran forward, who was named Player of the Match, reflected on the scrutiny and credited hard work for helping him respond in style.
“I know that whoever works hard, God helps him. It was a tough week, a dark one. It started as if I had retired from football, but I held on as I always do because I believe in work more than anything. It was tough, I have to admit, but we came back,” Ronaldo said after the game.
Portugal will now turn their attention to a crucial Group K showdown against Colombia at Miami Stadium on June 28. With one win and one draw from their opening two matches, Martinez’s side will be looking to carry this momentum forward and book their place in the knockout stages with another strong performance.
