Udaipur, January 20, 2025- Indian chess prodigy D Gukesh, 18, continues to impress with his recent performances, including his participation in the prestigious Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2025. On January 19, 2025, Gukesh competed in the Tata Steel Chess Tournament held in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands. In the second round, he played against Russian Grandmaster Vladimir Fedoseev. After a strong opening, Gukesh agreed to a draw, marking his first draw since becoming World Champion.
Other Highlights from the Tournament
Indian Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa won his match against Pentala Harikrishna. Meanwhile, Gukesh's fellow player Arjun Erigaisi also settled for a draw in his match.
Homecoming and Celebration
After winning the World Chess Championship in December 2024, Gukesh returned to Chennai to a grand welcome. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced a Rs 5 crore reward for Gukesh, recognizing his achievement as a huge milestone for Indian chess.
World Chess Championship Victory
On December 12, 2024, Gukesh made history by becoming the youngest undisputed World Chess Champion at 18 years old. He defeated China's Ding Liren in a thrilling match with a 7.5-6.5 score after 14 games.
