The incident happened in the first over of Mumbai Indians' innings. On the fifth ball of Khaleel Ahmed's over, the ball hit Ryan Rickelton’s front pad. But there was no strong appeal from the players.
Udaipur, April 22, 2025: Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s sharp eye for reviews is so famous that many people call the Decision Review System (DRS) the 'Dhoni Review System'. Dhoni has been successful in many reviews where even the umpires and the audience believed the original decision was correct. But later, the review showed a different result. Just like many of Dhoni’s bold and smart decisions as captain, his reviews often proved to be right.
But times have changed now. Dhoni’s batting is not as strong as before, and even his success as a leader is not as regular. For example, Chennai Super Kings have lost two out of the three matches under his captaincy in this year's IPL.
In the last match, where Chennai lost to Mumbai Indians by 9 wickets, the famous 'Dhoni Review System' also seemed to fail. Since that match, fans have started asking — is the Dhoni Review System not working anymore?
The incident happened in the first over of Mumbai Indians' innings. On the fifth ball of Khaleel Ahmed's over, the ball hit Ryan Rickelton’s front pad. But there was no strong appeal from the players. The umpire thought the ball would miss the leg stump and did not give it out. Usually, Dhoni would take a review in such situations, but this time, he did not.
Replay Showed the Ball Was Hitting the Stumps
Later, the replay showed that the ball was actually hitting the leg stump. If Dhoni had taken the review, Chennai could have got an early wicket. Rickelton, who was saved by this missed review, went on to score 24 runs from 19 balls. More importantly, he built a 63-run partnership with Rohit Sharma for the first wicket — which became the foundation for Mumbai’s win.
Social Media Trolled Dhoni for Not Taking the Review
After the match, many fans on social media started making fun of Dhoni for not using the review. People wrote, "Dhoni Review System failed" and shared the replay image where the ball was clearly hitting the stumps.
Former Cricketers Also Questioned Dhoni's Decision
After the match, former cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra said on Star Sports, "Today, the Dhoni Review System failed. The ball was going to hit the stumps, but the captain did not take the DRS."
Former CSK player Ambati Rayudu also pointed out Chennai’s problems, saying, "When your timing is not right, mistakes like these happen. CSK has now lost 6 out of 8 matches."
However, Shikhar Dhawan, who was also part of the discussion, said the responsibility was not only Dhoni's. "Khaleel Ahmed saw the ball closely when it hit the pad. So the bowler is equally responsible for not going for the review," Dhawan added.
