Udaipur, Aug 25, 2025: East Bengal’s dream of winning the Durand Cup ended on August 20. Diamond Harbour FC, playing its first season in the tournament, defeated them 2-1 in the semi-final and knocked them out. With this win, Abhishek Banerjee’s team reached the Durand Cup final for the first time. In the final of the 134th Durand Cup, they will face defending champions NorthEast United on Saturday, August 23.
Diamond Harbour won the match in the second half with two goals — one from Spanish defender Mikel Idiaquez and the other from Kerala forward Jobby Justin. Anwar Ali scored once for East Bengal but could not save his team. When the score was 1-1, it looked like East Bengal might take control. But football is full of surprises, and Diamond Harbour turned the game in their favor.
This match proved once again that possession and statistics do not win games — goals do. East Bengal had more of the ball, played with high pressure, and created chances, but they failed to score at the right moments. On the other side, Diamond Harbour took their chances well and beat East Bengal in style.
Old Player Broke East Bengal’s Heart
Diamond Harbour’s goalkeeper Mirshad Michu, who was once a reserve player for East Bengal and was also part of NorthEast United’s Durand Cup–winning team last season, played a big role. He stopped East Bengal from scoring many times.
Apart from him, Jobby Justin, who was once a rising star of East Bengal, scored in the final moments and gave Diamond Harbour a 2-1 win. With this, his old club was knocked out and his new team reached the final of the Durand Cup. Diamond and NorthEast have never come face to face with each other and the Durand Cup final will be their first encounter.

The final match of the 36 league games and 6 knockout fixtures will be played on August 23 and will begin at 1730hrs IST. In all, 24 teams participated in the Durand Cup 2025, with 42 matches being played before the grand finale. With 140 goals scored before the big final on Aug 23, it remains to be seen whether the underdogs continue with their sound form or the reigning champions hold on to their prized Durand Cup.
