Sept 24, 2025: Dickie Bird, a well-known Cricket Umpire hailing from England, breathed his last at the age of 92. Bird's former clubs, Leicestershire and Yorkshire confirmed the news of his demise.
He was most remembered for his presence at the Test match in 1996 between India and England, in which the stalwarts of Indian Cricket, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly scored a century each, on debut, and this debut match was the last match for Dickie Bird as an Umpire.
Having begun his Umpiring career in 1973, Dickie Bird went on to monitor 66 Tests and 76 One Day Internationals in both men's and women's cricket. He had the distinction of umpiring in ODI three World Cup finals and is also the recipient of the Officer of the Most Excellent Order (OBE) of the British Empire. Dickie Bird was knighted by Prince Charles in 2012. Prior to taking up umpiring as a career, Dickie Bird was a first class cricketer, who played for Leicestershire and Yorkshire. His playing career was cut short by injury, which made him take up umpiring, in which he excelled and made a name for himself.
