June 02, 2026: Football fans in India can finally breathe a sigh of relief. The long-running uncertainty over the broadcast rights for the FIFA World Cup 2026 in India has now come to an end, with Zee Entertainment Enterprises officially confirming that it has secured the rights to televise the tournament. The company has also announced that it will launch four dedicated sports channels under the banner of "Unite8 Sports" to bring the world's biggest football event to Indian audiences.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with the tournament set to begin on June 11. Since many matches are expected to be played late at night due to the time difference, there had been concerns among Indian fans regarding the tournament's broadcast plans. Those concerns have now been addressed, with Zee confirming that the matches will be available across its television network as well as on its digital streaming platform, Zee5.

Zee Secures Rights for Multiple FIFA Events

Zee's agreement with FIFA extends far beyond the 2026 World Cup. The broadcaster has secured the rights to air a total of 39 FIFA tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup 2030, the FIFA Women's World Cup, age-group men's and women's World Cups until 2034, and several other major international competitions.

In its official announcement, Zee referenced a famous quote often attributed to Swami Vivekananda: "You will be closer to Heaven through football than through the study of the Gita." The company used the quote to highlight the growing popularity of football among India's younger generation and its commitment to bringing global football events to fans across the country.

FIFA Accepts Reduced Bid as Zee Wins Broadcast Race

Reports had earlier suggested that FIFA was seeking nearly $100 million (around ₹930 crore) for the combined Indian broadcast rights of the 2026 and 2030 World Cups. However, major broadcasters such as JioHotstar and Sony Sports reportedly showed limited interest at that valuation.

According to reports, Zee eventually secured the rights with a bid estimated between $30 million and $35 million (approximately ₹300 crore). While the final figure is significantly lower than FIFA's initial expectations, it is believed to be considerably higher than the reported $20 million offer submitted by JioHotstar.

The agreement is also proving beneficial for Zee from a business perspective. Following confirmation of the deal, the company's stock reportedly witnessed a strong rise in the market, reflecting investor confidence in the broadcaster's growing sports portfolio.

With the launch of Unite8 Sports and the addition of major FIFA competitions to its lineup, Zee is set to become a major player in India's sports broadcasting landscape. For football fans, the announcement ensures uninterrupted access to some of the biggest international tournaments over the next decade, beginning with the highly anticipated FIFA World Cup 2026.
