Frank Off to a Flyer as Spurs Beat Reading 2-0
New signing Mohammed Kudus impresses in debut cameo, involved in both goals in 2-0 win over Reading
July 21, 2025 - Thomas Frank’s time at Tottenham started perfectly as his new team began pre-season with a 2-0 win over Reading. Two young players scored at the Select Car Leasing Stadium in Berkshire. Will Lankshear and Luka Vuskovic both made strong cases for more first-team chances with their performances.
Mohammed Kudus, who joined from West Ham last week for £55 million, came on after the break and made a big impact. He was involved in both goals and showed why he could be an important player for Spurs this season.
Frank Starts With a Win
Thomas Frank began his time as Tottenham manager with a 2-0 win over Reading in a pre-season match. He joined Spurs from Brentford last month and this was his first game in charge. There were many good signs, but also some things to improve.
In the first half, Tottenham played well and controlled the game. They handled Reading’s strong and physical style, but could not score. Dominic Solanke went close, and Pape Matar Sarr was stopped by Reading goalkeeper Joel Pereira. Cristian Romero was captain in the first half and had a header chance before the break. The score was 0-0 at halftime.
Quick Goals in Second Half
In the second half, Heung-Min Son took over as captain. Soon after the restart, Will Lankshear scored from a flick by Luka Vuskovic after a corner from Kudus. Just four minutes later, Vuskovic scored the second goal with a good finish. He was also assisted by Kudus, who looked very impressive on his debut.
Kudus, who joined from West Ham for £55 million, played on the right wing and showed great skill near the touchline. This may be the position Frank will use him in this season.
Frank used a 4-2-3-1 formation in both halves. He also gave chances to young players Alfie Devine and Jamie Donley to play in the No.10 role because James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski were not available.
Tottenham’s next match is against Luton, followed by games against Arsenal and Bayern Munich. Frank will go back to planning and training to get the team ready.
It was a good start for the new manager.
