Gaurav Sahu of Udaipur won the first Gold Medal for India in the Asian Powerlifting Championship that is underway at Istanbul in Turkey. He targetted a lift of 417.5kg to secure his overall Gold.
Gaurav won his and the country's first Gold in the 53kg Squat and Dead Lift events and secured a Bronze in the Bench Press. He also got an overall Gold in the 53kg Junior Category. Gaurav now has three Gold Medals and one Bronze to his name in the Asian Powerlifting Championship 2021, being held at the Bayrampasa Sports Complex in Istanbul, Turkey. This is Gaurav's first overall Gold Medal in his professional powerlifting career. Gaurav will be participating in his third international competition, when he represents India at the Asian Junir Classic Powerlifting Championship in the 53kg Category.
Vinod Sahu of the Rajasthan Powerlifting Association informed that Gaurav has been regularly competing at international levels and has been securing top spot in most of them. In his first international appearance at the Asian Powerlifting Championship in Hong Kong in April 2019, Gaurav secured his first international Gold Medal and a Bronze Medal, and stood 4th place overall. This tournament has been held after a long gap due to the COVID lockdown across the globe. Gaurav got his Visa a day before he was supposed to leave and was on strict diet control for a couple of days before the tournament to stay put in his weight category.
His family was elated on receiving the news and sweets were distributed all around. Members of the Rajasthan Powerlifting Association and Udaipur Powerlifting Association have congratulated Gaurav on his achievement.
