Udaipur, April 23, 2025: Abhishek Sharma — a name that has emerged as India’s new star in T20 cricket. He became known as India’s new power-hitter in a very short time. Abhishek earned his place in the Indian team after a strong performance in IPL 2024, and within a year, he managed to make a special mark. Recently, he got his first spot in the BCCI Central Contract list. Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh has played a big role in his success. After every match-winning innings, Abhishek often gave credit to Yuvraj Singh for his guidance. Meanwhile, Yuvraj’s father, Yograj Singh, has shared some important stories about how Yuvraj helped shape Abhishek Sharma’s cricket journey.
Grooming Abhishek Sharma
Yograj Singh recently shared how his son, Yuvraj Singh, played an important role in improving young cricketer Abhishek Sharma’s career. Speaking to News18 Punjabi, Yograj said,
“When we spoke to PCA and the coach about Abhishek Sharma, they told us he was mainly a bowler. But Yuvi asked us to check his records. When we did, we saw Abhishek had already scored 24 centuries. Yuvi said, ‘Why are people giving the wrong information? He has scored 24 centuries.’ This happened around six or seven years ago.”
Ban on Parties and Meeting His Girlfriend
Yograj Singh also revealed that Abhishek’s father tried hard to discipline him, but it was Yuvraj who truly changed his lifestyle.
Yograj said,
“Abhishek used to party late at night and spend time with his girlfriend. Yuvraj stopped him from doing all that. His father couldn’t control him, but Yuvi did. I saw Yuvi shouting at him, saying, ‘It’s 9 o’clock, go to bed! Do you understand, or should I come there?’”
Scared of Yuvraj, Abhishek would quickly turn off his phone and go to sleep. Yuvi even told his father to wake Abhishek up at 5 AM for practice.
Yuvraj Singh Also Guided Shubman Gill
Yograj also mentioned that Yuvraj Singh helped guide Shubman Gill in the same way. Both Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill played for India in the Under-19 World Cup in 2018.
Yograj said,
“The same thing happened with Shubman. When a diamond goes into the hands of another diamond, it becomes a Kohinoor. That’s what happened with Abhishek. If this diamond had gone into the wrong hands, it would have broken into pieces. Many young players in India have broken this way.”
