India Make History at Home, Hammer New Zealand by 96 Runs to Retain T20 World Cup

India successfully defended their T20 World Cup title and also became the first host nation to win the tournament at home, making it a historic night for Indian cricket.

February 08, 2026: India delivered a brilliant performance to defend their ICC Menโ€™s T20 World Cup title with a huge 96-run victory over New Zealand national cricket team in the final. The match was played at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday, where Indian players impressed with both bat and ball.

After being asked to bat first, India national cricket team put up a massive score of 255/5 in 20 overs. The Indian batters attacked the New Zealand bowlers from the beginning and kept the pressure on throughout the innings.

Sanju Samson led the charge with a powerful knock of 89 runs, while Abhishek Sharma played an explosive innings of 52 runs from just 21 balls. Ishan Kishan also made an important contribution with 54 runs, helping India build a very strong total.

Indiaโ€™s Batters Dominate the Final

India started carefully but soon picked up the pace. Abhishek Sharma attacked the bowlers during the powerplay and reached his half-century very quickly. His aggressive shots gave India a strong start.

Sanju Samson then took control of the innings. He played attacking shots all around the ground and entertained the huge crowd with several big sixes. His partnership with Ishan Kishan helped India cross the 100-run mark quickly.

Later in the innings, Kishan reached his fifty with some powerful hitting. Although India lost a few quick wickets near the end, the team still kept scoring runs.

In the final over, Shivam Dube smashed two sixes and three fours, collecting 24 runs and pushing India to a huge total of 255.

Chasing 256 runs, New Zealand never looked comfortable. Indian bowlers struck early and kept taking wickets at regular intervals. At one point, New Zealand were struggling at 72/5, which made the chase almost impossible.

Tim Seifert fought hard and scored a half-century, but he did not get enough support from the other batters. In the end, New Zealand were bowled out for 159 in 19 overs.

With this victory, India successfully defended their T20 World Cup title and also became the first host nation to win the tournament at home, making it a historic night for Indian cricket.
