Asia Cup 2025 Final: Team India Refuses Trophy from Mohsin Naqvi; BCCI Explains

"We cannot accept a trophy from someone who belongs to a country that is at war with us. That is why we refused. But this does not mean he can keep the trophy and medals with him" - Devji Saikia, Secretary, BCCI

Udaipur, Sept 29, 2025: In a strange turn of events, the Asia Cup trophy was not given to champions India after they refused to take it from Pakistan minister and ACC president Mohsin Naqvi. The drama came after India’s thrilling win over Pakistan in the Asia Cup final in Dubai on Sunday, where the Suryakumar Yadav-led team celebrated without the trophy.

The presentation ceremony started after a long delay, but only individual players got their awards. Even though India refused to accept the trophy from him, Naqvi stayed on the stage. In the end, the trophy was not given to the winning team — probably the first time this has happened in a cricket tournament.

BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia said "We cannot accept a trophy from someone who belongs to a country that is at war with us. That is why we refused. But this does not mean he can keep the trophy and medals with him." He also said that the board will lodge a "strong protest" against the remarks made by Asian Cricket Council and Pakistan Cricket Board President Mohsin Naqvi at the awards ceremony.

India defeated Pakistan by 5 wickets in the final of the Asia Cup 2025 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday. With this win, India became the Asian Champion for the ninth time.

An Hour-Long Wait and Controversy

In a dramatic turn of events, the Indian team was not given the Asia Cup trophy after their win. India refused to accept it from Pakistani minister and ACC President Mohsin Naqvi. The presentation ceremony started very late, but only individual awards were given. Naqvi stayed on stage, while the Indian team refused to take the trophy from him.

Many Indian fans stayed in the stadium despite the delay, and Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha was booed when he went on stage. The Indian players were ready to take the trophy from Emirates Cricket Board Vice President Khalid Al Zarooni, but Naqvi did not allow it.

The Indian team had already asked who would give the trophy, and the ACC knew India would not accept it from Naqvi. When Naqvi came on stage, fans chanted "Bharat Mata Ki Jai." Later, the organizers sent the trophy to the dressing room. During the ceremony, Simon announced, "I have been informed by the Asian Cricket Council that the Indian cricket team will not collect its awards tonight."

BCCI Explains the Refusal

BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia told news agency NAI that Team India decided not to accept the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi, who is a leader from Pakistan. He said, "."

Saikia added, "This is very unfortunate. We hope the trophy and medals will be given to India soon. At the ICC conference in Dubai in November, we will make a strong protest against the ACC Chairperson’s actions. We will not accept such behavior in the future."
