Ireland scripted history by completing their first-ever T20I series win over India with a dramatic one-run victory in Belfast. Prince Yadav starred on debut, but India's batting collapsed once again as Shreyas Iyer's captaincy got off to a disappointing start.

Ireland players celebrate after defeating India by one run in the second T20I in Belfast to complete a historic 2-0 series sweep.

29 June, 2026: India's disappointing tour of Ireland ended with another defeat as Shreyas Iyer's side lost the second T20I by just one run in Belfast, handing the hosts a historic 2-0 series sweep. It marked a nightmare start to Iyer's tenure as India's T20I captain, with the Men in Blue failing to register a single victory in the two-match series.

The result also ended one of India's most remarkable streaks in the shortest format. After going unbeaten in 16 consecutive T20I series and tournaments over nearly three years, including two T20 World Cup triumphs, India finally suffered another bilateral series defeat. It was also their first T20I series whitewash since 2019.

While India's batting once again disappointed, debutant Prince Yadav emerged as one of the few positives from the tour. The young pacer impressed with figures of 3/22, making full use of the swing-friendly conditions in Belfast. However, India's star-studded batting lineup failed to chase a modest target of 155, raising fresh questions ahead of the team's upcoming tour of England.

Shreyas Iyer won the toss and opted to bowl first after India made two changes to the playing XI. Prasidh Krishna and Washington Sundar were left out following disappointing performances in the opening match, while Prince Yadav and Suryansh Shedge made their T20I debuts.

Prince justified his selection immediately with an outstanding spell, relying on movement and disciplined bowling rather than outright pace. Shivam Dube supported him well with figures of 2/25, while Arshdeep Singh claimed two wickets despite proving expensive. Harshit Rana also chipped in with one wicket. For Ireland, Harry Tector anchored the innings with a composed 53, while Ben Calitz contributed 37 as the hosts posted 154.

Jay Mundra's spell leaves India reeling despite Tilak Verma's resistance

India's chase got off to a disastrous start. Openers Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma were both dismissed without scoring, leaving the visitors in deep trouble almost immediately. Abhishek's latest failure meant he has now registered six ducks in his last 14 T20I innings, while questions continue to be raised over Samson's inconsistency at the top of the order.

Captain Shreyas Iyer could not steady the innings either, departing for just 10 after misjudging the bounce. At one stage, India had slumped to 2/1 before slipping further into trouble. Indian-origin pacer Jay Mundra dismantled the top order, dismissing Samson, Abhishek and Shreyas to leave India chasing the game early.

Ishan Kishan's run-out added to India's misery before rain interrupted play for around 30 minutes. After the restart, Axar Patel and Tilak Verma attempted to rebuild the innings, but Axar failed to convert his start. Shivam Dube contributed a brisk 20 off 15 deliveries before falling at a crucial stage.

Tilak continued to fight almost single-handedly, scoring a determined 55 off 46 balls to keep India's hopes alive. However, once he was dismissed, the chase became increasingly difficult. Debutant Suryansh Shedge could not make an impact with the bat, leaving Harshit Rana to produce a late counterattack.

Harshit smashed 21 off just 10 balls and nearly pulled off an unlikely victory before being caught on the penultimate delivery while attempting another big hit. Prince Yadav struck a six off the final ball, but India eventually finished on 153/9, falling agonisingly short by a single run.

Ireland script history as India's unbeaten T20I run comes to an end

Ireland celebrated one of the greatest moments in their cricketing history by completing their first-ever T20I series victory over India. Having never beaten India in an international match before this series, the hosts won both games to register a memorable clean sweep on home soil.

For India, the defeat marked the end of a remarkable run in T20 cricket. The Men in Blue had not lost a T20I series since their 3-2 defeat to the West Indies in 2023 and had remained unbeaten across 16 successive T20I series and tournaments, a period that included two T20 World Cup titles.

The batting failures in Belfast are now likely to become a major talking point before India's tour of England. The repeated struggles of the top order have also intensified calls for young batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi to be given an opportunity, while head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shreyas Iyer will be under pressure to find answers quickly after a series that exposed several weaknesses in the team's batting unit.
