2030 Commonwealth Games: India Wins Bid, Ahmedabad is Host City

Nov 27, 2025 - After a gap of 20 years, the Commonwealth Games is finally returning to India. On Wednesday, India’s bid to host the 2030 event was approved over Nigeria during the Commonwealth Sports General Assembly held in Glasgow, Scotland. Delegates from a total of 74 Commonwealth member nations and territories voted in favour of India.
Ahmedabad has been announced as the official host city of the 2030 Games. One of the biggest sporting events, India will host the Commonwealth Games for the second time. India last hosted the games in 2010 in New Delhi.
The 2030 Games will mark 100 years of the Commonwealth Games. The first Games was held in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada.
The centenary edition will feature between 15-17 sports disciplines. The host nation can also propose up to two new or traditional sports. Under review are archery, beach volleyball, badminton, 3x3 basketball and 3x3 wheelchair basketball, T20 cricket, rugby sevens, cycling, diving, hockey, judo, rhythmic gymnastics, squash, triathlon and para triathlon, wrestling and shooting.
The Indian delegation at the Glasgow meeting included Joint Secretary Runal, Indian Olympic Association president PT Usha, Gujarat Sports Minister Harsh Sanghavi and others. The announcement was followed by Indian drummers and garba dancers bursting into the assembly hall and celebrating the moment.
Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hailed India’s selection. He posted on X, "Delighted that India has won the bid to host the Centenary Commonwealth Games 2030. Congratulations to the people of India and the sporting ecosystem. It is our collective commitment and spirit of sportsmanship that has placed India firmly on the global sporting map."
The 2030 Commonwealth Games are considered the first major step toward India’s goal of hosting the 2036 Olympic Games. India aims to host the Olympics for the first time, and if that happens, the Games are also likely to take place in Ahmedabad.
