May 29, 2026: India Women officially began their preparations for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 with the opening match of the white-ball series against England Women in Chelmsford. However, ahead of the important clash, the Indian team management decided to rest regular captain Harmanpreet Kaur for the first T20I. In her absence, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana took charge of the side as captain. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the development through an official social media statement shortly before the toss.

The BCCI stated, “Captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been rested for the first T20I against England Women in Chelmsford. Smriti Mandhana is leading the side in her absence.” At the toss, Mandhana also reassured fans by saying that Harmanpreet is likely to return for the second T20I of the series. India used the opportunity to hand a debut to promising pacer Nandani Sharma, who recently impressed everyone during the Women’s Premier League 2026 season by finishing as the joint-leading wicket-taker of the tournament.

England Women were also without their regular captain Nat Sciver-Brunt, who is currently recovering from a calf injury. In her absence, Charlie Dean led the side for the opening T20I. England won the toss and decided to bowl first while also handing a debut cap to young player Tilly Corteen-Coleman. The series is considered extremely important for both teams as they continue their preparations for the Women’s T20 World Cup, which will be played in England and Wales from June 14.

India Looking to Build Momentum Before Women’s T20 World Cup

India enters the England series with confidence after performing strongly against the hosts in their previous white-ball encounters. The team management is using this tour to help players adapt to English conditions before the start of the World Cup. Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur admitted before the series that winning a World Cup title in England would be a special achievement in her career.

Speaking during the pre-match press conference in Chelmsford, Harmanpreet said, “It will be a dream come true for any cricketer who made their debut in England and then winning the World Cup in England. I think I can't ask anything else for myself and from God.” Her statement reflected the importance of the upcoming tournament for the Indian side, which has come close to winning ICC titles on several occasions in recent years.

Bharti Fulmali and Nandani Sharma Earn Major Opportunities

India’s Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad features a balanced combination of experienced stars and emerging young talent. Harmanpreet Kaur will lead the side, while Smriti Mandhana has been named vice-captain. The batting department includes important names like Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Richa Ghosh and Deepti Sharma, who are expected to play key roles during the tournament.

One of the biggest talking points from the squad announcement was the inclusion of middle-order batter Bharti Fulmali. Harmanpreet later confirmed that Fulmali was selected as the replacement for injured all-rounder Amanjot Kaur after her impressive performances in WPL 2026. Fulmali attracted attention for her fearless batting style and ability to score quickly under pressure situations.

Young pacer Nandani Sharma also earned a deserved opportunity after a brilliant WPL campaign. She finished as the joint-highest wicket-taker of the tournament with 17 wickets in 10 matches and quickly emerged as one of the most exciting fast-bowling talents in domestic cricket. Her inclusion adds more depth to India’s pace attack ahead of the World Cup.

India Finalises Spin and Pace Combination for England Conditions

India’s spin department for the tournament will be led by Shree Charani, Shreyanka Patil and Radha Yadav. The trio managed to secure places in the squad ahead of experienced players like Sneh Rana and young spinner Vaishnavi Sharma. Harmanpreet particularly praised Radha Yadav’s improvement as an all-round option after her strong performances with both bat and ball for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in WPL 2026.

India’s pace attack will feature experienced bowler Renuka Singh alongside Arundhati Reddy, Kranti Goud and Nandani Sharma. Meanwhile, Yastika Bhatia has been selected as the backup wicketkeeper in the squad.

With the Women’s T20 World Cup now approaching quickly, the England series will play a major role in helping India finalise combinations, assess player form, and prepare mentally for the conditions they are expected to face during the tournament.
