IPL 2026: How Can CSK Still Qualify for Playoffs After Losing to LSG?
Chennai Super Kings suffered a massive setback in the IPL 2026 playoff race after their defeat to Lucknow Super Giants. Here’s a look at CSK’s qualification scenario and what they need to do to stay alive.
May 16, 2026: Chennai Super Kings suffered a major setback in their race for the Indian Premier League playoffs after their seven-wicket defeat against Lucknow Super Giants on Friday.
After a difficult start to the season, the side led by Ruturaj Gaikwad had managed to revive their campaign and put qualification back in their own hands. However, the defeat to LSG has now left Chennai dependent on other results in the battle for a place in the top four.
The loss left CSK with 12 points from 12 matches and pushed them down to sixth place in the IPL 2026 points table. With only two league matches remaining, the margin for error has become extremely small. Another defeat from here would almost certainly end their playoff hopes. CSK’s Net Run Rate of +0.027 has also emerged as a major concern. In what is turning into a tightly contested playoff race, the NRR could become the deciding factor, and Chennai currently have a lower NRR than all the teams above them in the standings.
CSK Need Big Wins in Remaining Matches
The qualification equation for Chennai Super Kings is now simple — they must win both of their remaining league games to stay alive in the playoff race. Even then, a place in the top four may not be guaranteed.
Chennai’s remaining fixtures include crucial clashes against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad. These matches are expected to play a major role in deciding the final playoff spots.
The defeat against Lucknow also hurt CSK’s Net Run Rate, which means the team will ideally need convincing victories in both games. Strong wins would not only improve Chennai’s NRR but would also damage the qualification chances of direct rivals like SRH and GT. With eight teams still mathematically in contention for the playoffs, every remaining match could have a major impact on the points table.

RR, PBKS and SRH Results Could Shape CSK’s Fate
Apart from winning their own games, Chennai Super Kings will also be keeping a close eye on the results involving Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
SRH are currently third with 14 points from 12 matches, while PBKS sit fourth with 13 points from 12 games. Rajasthan Royals are just ahead of CSK with 12 points from 11 matches and also have a game in hand. If Rajasthan Royals win all their remaining matches, they will finish on 18 points and qualify comfortably ahead of Chennai. CSK would therefore want RR to lose at least one game and keep the race open till the final week.
Similarly, Punjab Kings reaching 17 points with two more wins would put them beyond Chennai’s reach. As a result, CSK fans will be hoping PBKS drop at least one of their remaining fixtures.
The clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad could prove especially important. A win for Chennai would not only improve their own tally but would also bring SRH back within reach in the standings.
If other results go in their favour and CSK manage strong performances in their remaining matches, the five-time champions could still keep their IPL 2026 playoff dream alive.
