January 03, 2026: Another loss for sport as geopolitics takes over once again in cricket. The BCCI has instructed the Kolkata Knight Rider's to release their pace spearhead Mustafizur Rehman from their squad for the IPL 2026 tournament.

This announcement was made by BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia who has confirmed the decision of the BCCI, after intense public and political pressure in the light of the recent developments in Bangladesh. Saikia was pointing to the deteriorating diplomatic and civil unrest in Bangladesh that has sparked protests across India.

KKR had secured Mustafizur for Rs 9.2Cr, which was the largest bid for a Bangladesh player in IPL history. KKR has formed a formidable international battery of pace bowlers around Cameron Green, Sunil Narain, Mustafizur and Pathirana to shoulder the daeth overs, but now will have to rely on their Indian pacers Harshit Rana and Umran Malik to fill the slot.

The BCCI has permitted KKR to nominate a replacement player under IPL regulations once Mustafizur is released.
