SRH announce Gerald Coetzee as replacement signing for injured David Payne in IPL 2026 season
Sunrisers Hyderabad sign Gerald Coetzee as David Payne’s injury replacement for IPL 2026, strengthening their pace attack mid-season.
April 18, 2026: Sunrisers Hyderabad have made a key change to their squad in IPL 2026 by bringing in South African fast bowler Gerald Coetzee as a replacement for injured England pacer David Payne. The decision came after Payne, who played two matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad, was ruled out of the season due to an ankle injury. The franchise acted quickly to fill the gap in their pace attack as the tournament moves into a crucial phase.
Coetzee’s IPL return and experience
Interestingly, Coetzee went unsold in the IPL 2026 auction, but he is not new to the league. He has previously represented Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans, where he played 14 matches and picked up 15 wickets. His ability to bowl at high pace and attack with the new ball makes him a useful option for SRH, especially in pressure situations. The franchise has reportedly signed him for ₹2 crore.
Strong international record and added depth
Coetzee also brings solid international experience with South Africa national cricket team. He has played across formats, including Tests, ODIs, and T20Is, and has taken 67 international wickets so far. Known for consistently bowling above 145 kmph, he is expected to provide SRH with much-needed breakthroughs in the middle overs, an area where the team has looked slightly inconsistent this season.
Apart from his bowling, Coetzee is also capable of contributing useful runs in the lower order, which adds further balance to the squad. His arrival also comes at a time when SRH have seen encouraging performances from young domestic pacers, giving the team more depth and competition within the bowling unit.
Meanwhile, SRH are also monitoring the fitness of skipper Pat Cummins, who is recovering from a back issue. Although he has been cleared to resume bowling, the team may not rush his return to the playing XI. Under the leadership of Ishan Kishan, SRH have managed two wins from five matches so far and are looking to improve their consistency in the coming games.
The team is now preparing for a key fixture against Chennai Super Kings at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. This match is expected to be an important test for SRH’s updated bowling attack, including Coetzee, as they aim to climb higher in the points table and strengthen their playoff chances.
