May 14, 2026: The Iran national football team received a grand farewell reception in Tehran ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite ongoing uncertainty surrounding the team’s participation in the tournament.

Thousands of supporters gathered at Inqilab Square in Tehran on Wednesday night to cheer for the national team before the World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico starting on June 11. Players took the stage during the event, delivered patriotic speeches and interacted with the fans. The new jersey for Iran’s 2026 World Cup campaign was also officially unveiled during the ceremony.

Mehdi Taj, president of the Football Federation of Iran (FFIRI), described the celebration as the “biggest and best farewell reception” for the national team across the last four World Cup campaigns. Addressing the crowd, Taj said the players stand united with the people and hope to protect the country’s dignity and honour during the tournament.

Visa Uncertainty Continues to Trouble Iran’s World Cup Preparations

Despite the celebrations, serious concerns remain regarding the team’s travel arrangements and entry into the United States for the tournament.

Tensions escalated after military strikes involving the United States and Israel reportedly targeted locations across Iran earlier this year, raising fears over political complications affecting Iran’s World Cup participation. The issue became more complicated after Mehdi Taj was reportedly denied entry into Canada for the recent FIFA Congress because of alleged links with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Both the United States and Canada classify the IRGC as a terrorist organisation.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that individuals associated with the organisation would not be allowed to enter the country. Iran are scheduled to play all three of their group-stage matches in the United States, increasing concerns over whether players, officials and federation members will receive visas on time.

Hedayat Mombeini said the federation has not yet received any official visa communication but remains hopeful that FIFA will help resolve the issue before the tournament begins.

He also stressed that sports should remain separate from politics and called on FIFA to ensure smooth entry for all participating teams.

Iran Continues Preparations as FIFA Faces Heat Concerns for 2026 World Cup

As part of their preparations, Iran will face the Gambia national football team in a warm-up match in Turkey on May 29. The federation is also attempting to organize another friendly match during the training camp.

Meanwhile, climate experts have raised concerns over extreme heat conditions during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. According to the World Weather Attribution (WWA), players and fans could face significantly higher heat and humidity levels compared to the 1994 World Cup hosted in the United States.

Scientists warned that 26 matches could be played under dangerous heat conditions where the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) may reach 26 degrees Celsius — a level considered physically risky for players. The international footballers’ union, FIFPro, recommends mandatory cooling breaks once the WBGT touches that level.

To tackle the issue, FIFA has already made cooling and water breaks compulsory during matches. Seventeen of the high-risk matches are expected to be played in air-conditioned stadiums to reduce the danger posed by extreme temperatures.
