Why Iran's Winning Goal vs Egypt Was Disallowed by VAR Despite Finding the Net at FIFA World Cup 2026
Iran celebrated what looked like a dramatic winner against Egypt at the FIFA World Cup 2026, only for VAR to rule it out. Here's why the goal was disallowed and how it changed Group G.
June 27, 2026: Iran were seconds away from securing one of the biggest wins in their FIFA World Cup history before VAR broke their hearts.
Deep into extra time, the ball found the back of the net and the Iranian players erupted in celebration. Goal-scorer Khalilzadeh even took off his shirt as the team believed they had sealed a dramatic 2-1 victory over Egypt. The goal would have guaranteed Iran a place in the knockout stage for the first time in the tournament.
However, the celebrations came to a sudden end when the referee signalled for a VAR review. At first, many believed the officials were checking for a possible handball. Instead, VAR ruled that Khalilzadeh was offside, and the goal was disallowed. The decision left Iran stunned and changed the outcome of the match.
Why was Iran's goal ruled out?
Many fans were confused because Egypt's Hamza Abdelkarim was standing behind Khalilzadeh when the shot was taken. Under the IFAB Laws of the Game, however, a player is offside if any part of the head, body or feet is beyond the second-last opponent at the moment the ball is played.
Although goalkeepers are usually one of the two last defenders, the law does not specifically mention the goalkeeper. It simply states that there must be two opponents between the attacker and the goal line.
When Khalilzadeh took his shot, Egypt goalkeeper moved well off his line. That left Yasser Ibrahim and Abdelkarim as the last two Egyptian players. Khalilzadeh was slightly ahead of Abdelkarim, making him offside. As a result, VAR correctly disallowed the goal under the IFAB rules.
This is Irans last minute goal against Egypt where it was ruled out for offside by VAR.
The rules says an attacker is considered onside if there are at least two opponents between the attacker and the goal line when the ball is played to them.

If the goal had counted, Iran would have finished second in Group G behind Belgium and qualified directly for the Round of 32. Instead, they must now wait for the remaining group matches to learn whether they can still reach the knockout stage.
After the match, Iran's players left behind an emotional handwritten note in their dressing room in Seattle, following their 1-1 draw against Egypt. The message quickly went viral on social media for its powerful words about respect, fairness and national pride.
The players wrote that they come from a country that has "placed honour above victory" for thousands of years. They described football as "a test of character" and added, "Fair Play is not just a line in football's rules; it is the soul of the game."
The note also thanked the people of Seattle for their hospitality and expressed gratitude to Iranian fans for their unwavering support throughout the tournament. It ended with the message: "IRAN, Always standing tall!"
Egypt began the match as Group G leaders and briefly dropped to third place when Iran's late goal was initially awarded. However, after VAR overturned the goal, Egypt secured qualification for the Round of 32, while Iran's World Cup future remains uncertain.
