What Started the Controversy?
The issue started after India’s victory in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. Some team members visited a Hanuman temple in Ahmedabad with the trophy. Kirti Azad later criticised the move on social media. He said the Indian cricket team represents people from all religions and asked why the trophy was taken only to a temple.
Azad wrote on X that the trophy belongs to all Indians, not to one religion. He suggested that if the team wanted to visit a religious place, they could also go to a mosque, church, or gurdwara..
K Azad: Khiladi kisi dharm ya mazhab ka nahi hota, team ka hota hai
Reporter: To sir mandir chale gaye to kya gunaah ho gya?
K Azad: ...........

His comments started a big debate on social media and in political circles. Some people supported his view that sports should stay separate from religion, while others said the temple visit was simply a personal act of thanks.
Meanwhile, Kishan’s short reply shows that many players want to stay away from the controversy and focus on celebrating India’s historic T20 World Cup win.
