The result helped the Mariners climb to second place in the league standings with six points, level with local rivals East Bengal FC but behind on goal difference. Meanwhile, Chennaiyin FC stayed in 11th position after the defeat.

Maclaren and Petratos Shine for Mohun Bagan

The home team controlled much of the possession from the early stages and built pressure through continuous attacks. Chennaiyin FC tried to defend in numbers and focused mainly on counterattacking opportunities. The visitors had their first clear chance when a cross reached Iñigo Martín inside the box, but he could not connect cleanly with the ball. At the other end, Chennaiyin goalkeeper Mohammad Nawaz made several important saves, including a low stop to deny Dimitrios Petratos before he was later forced off after a collision, and substitute goalkeeper Samik Mitra replaced him.

Jamie Maclaren gave Mohun Bagan the lead just before halftime. The goal came after Anirudh Thapa intercepted possession and sent a precise pass into Maclaren’s path, allowing the striker to calmly finish past the advancing goalkeeper. In the second half, the Mariners continued pressing for another goal. Their efforts paid off in the 65th minute when Dimitrios Petratos scored with a first-time volley after receiving a cross from Subhasish Bose. The shot went past the goalkeeper, who managed only a slight touch before the ball crossed the line.

Even after securing a two-goal advantage, Mohun Bagan kept attacking and created more scoring chances. Players like Petratos, Maclaren, and substitute Jason Cummings attempted to extend the lead, but poor finishing and some good goalkeeping kept the score unchanged. Chennaiyin FC also tried to push forward in the closing stages but could not break through the well-organized Mohun Bagan defense, and the match ended 2-0 in favor of the home side.
