Test Draw Drama: Jadeja Rejects Stokes’ Early Handshake
Spirit of the game questioned after Stokes’ reaction to India's decision
July 28, 2025 - The Manchester Test match between India and England ended in a draw. But in the last one hour, many things happened that made cricket fans curious. For example, Ben Stokes wanted to shake hands and end the match early, but Ravindra Jadeja refused. Because of this, the England captain had to continue playing even though he didn’t want to.
If a match ends without a result, it is called a "draw". This means that neither team is able to win the match, either because time runs out or a team cannot finish its innings. According to the rules of Test cricket, if both captains mutually agree before time, the match can be declared a draw.
In the Manchester Test, England gave up in front of India's strong fight, and the match ended in a draw. But England captain’s actions in the last one hour raised questions about the spirit of the game.
When Jadeja was batting on 89 and Washington Sundar was on 80, Stokes offered to end the match early by shaking hands. But both Indian players, close to their centuries, rejected the offer. This irritated Stokes and he started taking jibes at them.
However, Jadeja and Sundar ignored him and went on to complete their centuries.
India is still trailing 1-2 in the Test series and will aim to level it in the final Test at The Oval.
