Jaiswal’s Explosive Ton Strengthens Case for T20 Return

Yashasvi Jaiswal produced a blistering 48-ball century in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, leading Mumbai to a record chase

Dec 15, 2025 - Yashasvi Jaiswal is currently not part of Team India’s T20 squad, which has increased his determination to return to the side in the shortest format. The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy has given him the ideal platform to make a strong case. In the second match of the tournament, the left-handed batter produced a sensational century, a knock that many in the cricket fraternity believe carries a clear message ahead of the T20 World Cup.

Mumbai had suffered a nine-wicket defeat against Hyderabad in their opening match. On Sunday (December 14), however, they made a strong comeback with a convincing win over Haryana at the DY Patil Academy ground in Ambi, Pune. Yashasvi played a commanding innings of 101 runs off 50 balls, which included 16 fours and one six. Sarfaraz Khan provided excellent support with a brisk 64 off just 25 deliveries. Their aggressive batting helped Mumbai successfully chase down Haryana’s target of 235 runs with 15 balls to spare.

Jaiswal Leads Record Chase

Jaiswal's century registers his maiden hundred in the tournament. This was also his fourth century in professional T20 cricket. His remarkable knock helped the defending champions record the second-highest successful run chase in the history of the competition. Jharkhand remain at the top of the list after chasing 236 against Punjab on Friday.

Earlier, Haryana posted a formidable total of 234 runs in 20 overs. Captain Ankit Kumar starred with 89 off 42 balls, while Nishant Sindhu added 69 off 38. In reply, Jaiswal received excellent support from Sarfaraz, with the pair adding 88 runs in just 37 balls. Sarfaraz, who went unsold in last year’s IPL mega auction, impressed with an aggressive 64 off 25 balls, a knock that experts believe could boost his prospects ahead of the IPL mini-auction on the 16th. Mumbai eventually chased down the target in 17.3 overs, losing six wickets. Ajinkya Rahane also chipped in with a quick 21 off 10 balls.

Pressure on Gill

India’s Test captain Shubman Gill has been opening in T20s since his inclusion in the Asia Cup squad, but his recent form has been inconsistent. In his last six T20 innings, Gill has scored 0, 4, 29*, 46, 15, and 5. Since his return, he has accumulated 263 runs in 14 innings at an average of 23.90 and a strike rate of 142.93, without registering a single half-century. In contrast, Jaiswal’s explosive form suggests he is applying serious pressure on Gill for a place in India’s T20 setup.
