23 March , 2026: Jasprit Bumrah, the star fast bowler of Mumbai Indians, has checked into the BCCI Centre of Excellence just less than a week before the start of IPL 2026. However, it is still not clear whether his visit is due to any injury concern or just a routine fitness check-up.

Mumbai Indians are set to begin their IPL 2026 campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders on March 29 at the Wankhede Stadium. As per a report by The Times of India, Bumrah is currently at the facility in Karnataka and has not yet joined the Mumbai Indians squad.

Last week, MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene had confirmed that four Mumbai Indians players, who were part of India’s T20 World Cup-winning squad, have been given an extended break. He explained that the team management wanted those players to get proper rest before joining the squad.

Jayawardene said that the team will start their pre-season training as usual, focusing on hard work and helping new players settle into the setup. He also added that the players who were part of the T20 World Cup will join the team later, most likely closer to the first match. He further mentioned that overseas players have already travelled back home and will return in time to get at least one week of training before the opening game.

Bumrah’s recent form and why he is crucial for MI

Bumrah is coming into IPL 2026 after a fantastic performance in the T20 World Cup. The 32-year-old was one of the top wicket-takers in the tournament, picking up 14 wickets. He also delivered a match-winning performance in the final, where his four-wicket haul played a big role in helping India win their second straight T20 World Cup title and third overall.

If Bumrah is unavailable due to any injury, it will be a major setback for Mumbai Indians. Even though captain Hardik Pandya has a strong and experienced squad, Bumrah remains the biggest match-winner in the team. His ability to bowl in powerplay, middle overs, and death overs makes him a complete fast bowler.

Bumrah also had an impressive IPL 2025 season. He picked up 18 wickets in just 12 matches and showed great control with the ball. In a season where many matches saw scores going above 200 and even 250 runs, his economy rate of just 6.67 stood out as exceptional.

With a total of 183 wickets in the IPL, Bumrah is still the leading wicket-taker for Mumbai Indians. He has played a key role in four of the franchise’s five title-winning campaigns and continues to be one of their most important and experienced players. Mumbai Indians will now be hoping that he joins the squad soon and is fully fit before the start of the tournament.
