Australian T20 World Cup-Winning Pacer Announces Retirement
Kane Richardson has announced his retirement from professional cricket at the age of 34. The Australian fast bowler represented the national team and was part of the squad that won the 2021 T20 World Cup.
January 27, 2026: Australian fast bowler Kane Richardson has retired from professional cricket at the age of 34. He represented Australia in limited-overs cricket, playing 25 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 36 T20 Internationals (T20Is). One of the biggest moments of his career was being part of the squad that won the T20 World Cup in 2021.
Richardson was born in Darwin and began his cricket journey in domestic competitions. He played for the Northern Territory and South Australia, making his List A debut in the 2008–09 season. In 2013, he made his international debut for Australia in an ODI against Sri Lanka.
Speaking about his retirement, Richardson said, “From making my debut back in 2009 until now, I feel like I have given everything I had, and this feels like the right time to finish this enjoyable part of my life. I have been lucky to represent my country and many franchise teams around the world. I never took this opportunity lightly, and I hope people could see that I dreamed of being a cricketer since I was a kid growing up in Darwin.”
Richardson’s BBL journey
While his international career was important, Kane Richardson became best known for his performances in the Big Bash League (BBL). He was one of the few players to feature in every season of the tournament.
Richardson began his BBL career with the Adelaide Strikers, where he played for six seasons. Ahead of the 2017–18 season, he moved to the Melbourne Renegades. He went on to represent the Renegades for eight seasons. Later, he signed a one-year deal with the Sydney Sixers for the 2025–26 season.
He finished his BBL career as the fifth-highest wicket-taker in the league’s history, with a total of 142 wickets.

Richardson’s IPL and overseas career
Outside Australia, Richardson also played in several franchise leagues around the world. He made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut in 2013 with Pune Warriors India. Later, he played for Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
In the IPL, Richardson played 15 matches and took 19 wickets. He finished with an economy rate of 8.45, showing his value as a reliable fast bowler.
