April 07, 2026: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) was abandoned due to persistent rain and a wet outfield at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Monday. Despite multiple inspections, the ground conditions did not improve sufficiently, forcing officials to call off the match and award one point each to both teams.

The interruption began when a light drizzle quickly intensified into heavy rain, accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorm activity. Umpires were left with no option but to halt play and bring the covers onto the field. Although the rain eventually subsided, large puddles across the outfield made it unsafe to resume the game.

Match Interrupted by Weather

Earlier in the evening, KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and opted to bat first. However, the hosts made a shaky start, reaching 25/2 in just 3.4 overs after losing early wickets, including Finn Allen and Cameron Green. The brief phase of play was the only action possible before weather conditions brought proceedings to a standstill.

Ground staff made continuous efforts to restore playing conditions by covering the pitch and clearing excess water. However, the intensity of the rain left several parts of the field waterlogged. After conducting multiple inspections, the umpires ultimately deemed the conditions unfit for play, resulting in the match being officially abandoned.

This outcome adds to the frustration for KKR, who are yet to register a win in IPL 2026. With two losses and one no-result, they currently sit at the bottom of the points table with just one point and a negative net run rate. While the shared point offers slight relief, it does little to ease the pressure on the side.

In contrast, PBKS continue to enjoy a strong start to their campaign. Having secured victories in their opening two matches, they remain comfortably placed in the top four. The additional point from this abandoned match further strengthens their position, taking them to four points with a healthy net run rate.

Weather forecasts had already indicated the possibility of rain and thunderstorms in Kolkata, with alerts issued earlier in the day. Both teams had also experienced disrupted practice sessions due to similar conditions prior to the match.

Notably, this marks the second consecutive season in which a KKR vs PBKS fixture at Eden Gardens has been affected by rain. The repeated interruptions have disappointed fans, many of whom expressed their frustration on social media while hoping for better conditions in upcoming matches.

As per IPL regulations, both teams were awarded one point each due to the no-result. While PBKS will look to maintain their positive momentum, KKR will be eager to secure their first win as the tournament progresses. Despite such weather-related setbacks, the IPL 2026 season continues to deliver high-intensity cricket, even as unpredictable conditions remain a challenge.
