Udaipur, April 12, 2025: England’s Jimmy Anderson is set to be knighted for his contribution to cricket. The fast bowler, who retired from international cricket last year, is the highest wicket-taker in Test history among pacers.
Even after saying goodbye to the national team, the 42-year-old is still playing domestic cricket for Lancashire. In the UK, outgoing Prime Ministers can recommend names for knighthood across different fields, which are then approved by the monarch. Jimmy Anderson’s name was included in the honours list by former PM Rishi Sunak, who resigned last November.
Anderson's Long Cricket Journey
Anderson made his international debut in December 2002 in an ODI against Australia. However, he is best remembered for his brilliant performance in Test matches.
A Record-Breaking Career
Before retiring in July 2024, Anderson played 188 Tests, 194 ODIs, and 19 T20Is. He took 704 wickets in Tests — the most by any fast bowler in the history of the format. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) gave him a farewell during his last match.
Only Cricketer in Sunak’s List
Anderson is the only sportsperson named in former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's 'Resignation Honours List'.
List of Knighted Cricketers
Many famous cricketers have received knighthood in the past. From England, Andrew Strauss, Alastair Cook, Geoff Boycott, and Ian Botham have been knighted. From other countries, Don Bradman (Australia), Richard Hadlee (New Zealand), and Viv Richards (West Indies) were also given the same honor.
What Does Knighthood Mean?
When someone is knighted, they are given the title 'Sir' before their name. It's a great honor for their contribution in their field.
